HAVEN PRESENTS: MOKOTRON

HALF/TIME: WELCOMED TO WREXHAM
Half/Time are a Te reo Māori Punk band from Kiririroa who are journeying across the globe to perform at FOCUS festival in Wrexham, Wales. The oppoutunity is serving not only to share the energy and flair the band brings to the stage, but a slice of the te reo Māori revitalisation and compare notes with the waves the welsh are making in reviltising their own language.

BROODS: SPACE ISLAND

121 Festival - A Dance Odyssey Dream
121 Festival was the first sip of water after a two year festival drought for many, and boy oh boy, was it a good sip. It was everything, and more. A collision of music, art, food, drinks, camping, fashion, market stalls, yoga, and relaxed people. Everything good in the world was gathered at Tauherenikau Racecourse in the Wairarapa, and it was created to be experienced by thousands of people for three days in March to wrap up Summer.

LEAPING TIGER: GODSPEED!
They say New Zealand is an export economy, and after winning the Aotearoa Music Award for Electronic Artist at the last Aotearoa Music Awards, Leaping Tiger has become the latest of the country’s high quality exports. But don’t think for a second that the now London-based has forgotten his roots. His sophomore album, Godspeed!, might as well have a “Made in New Zealand” sticker stamped on the cover, as he, along with his crop of kiwi contributors, interweave. aspects of both hip-hop and electronica in a way that is both new and familiar.

The Raddlers - Diamond in the Blue
Sam Elliott sits down with Kevin Fernando of the Raddlers to discuss where the band is sitting ahead of the release of their single “Diamond in the Blue”

Sugar and Spice, and Everything Nice
Sugar and Spice, and Everything Nice. If these are the ingredients chosen to create the perfect electronic music scene in Christchurch, then Beccie B is Chemical X. Over the last two years, Ōtautahi has played host to a systematic rewiring of the electronic scene, resulting in a flurry of female disc jockeys frequenting a raft of your favourite venues.

TWOMINDS FESTIVAL
Twominds are a group of mates who got together because they wanted to create high quality experiences centred around music and art. That kaupapa, which has been intertwined from their first flat party, still applies to their newest venture - throwing a music festival. To get a finger on the pulse, Flynn sat down with Corban and Dan from the label/collective to discuss the imminent and inaugural Twominds Festival.

DARTZ - The Hardest Working Band In New Zealand
You may have heard of DARTZ, the band from Wellington, New Zealand from one of their many elaborate schemes. Whether it be doing a 24 hour telethon to sell 420 copies of their albums, writing songs about the importance of getting your drugs tested and ‘one outsing’ Captain Cook, or even playing fourteen house parties in one day, it’s safe to assume that the DARTZ boys always have a trick up their sleeve.
Avantdale Bowling Club - TREES
Jazz Hip-Hop heavyweights Avantdale Bowling Club released TREES, the follow up to their 2018 Taite Music Prize winning debut in september. They are currently touring the four-years-in-the-making album.

The Portside Cowboy Goes Walking Through London Street
Sam Bambery is a Ōtautahi/Christchurch-based musician consistently overthinking his local scene. He released his debut album Songs About Sailors in March this year and is continuing work in the studio for a new album.

Crete on Waiata Anthems 2022
To commemorate Waiata Anthems Week 2022, we had a kōrero with artist Crete, about her music, collaboration with Stan Walker and Pacific Heights on Pōuri, a te reo rendition of Cold Nights and being part of the Waiata Anthems kaupapa.

Opening up to the Strange Universe

Rita Mae: Candy’s House
Rita Mae is a talented indie-pop artist and all round lovely human making her moves in the Tāmaki Makaurau music scene. We chatted with Rita about her recent release Candy’s House.

Sofar Sounds/Halaو Dunedin
In the charming, and oddly serene setting of the brewery NEW NEW NEW Corporation, a tightly bunched audience, seated like school kids, watch on in awe as three unknown acts play mere meters away on an unassuming Sunday afternoon. From the street you would hardly believe the venue was the setting of a live music event, but that’s the vibe of Sofar Sounds. Sofar stands for “Songs From A Room”, and is an international musical organisation with the beautifully translatable idea of hosting intimate music events with secret artists.

Spotlight on: HINA
HINA is the name of Tāmaki Makaurau singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Amy Boroevich. In 2020, HINA released her debut EP, Muse. Amy’s sound is deeply connected with her own personal identity. The music reflects her own personal journey of self-discovery in a way that is relatable, honest and groovy. Newzician sat down with Amy to discuss how a young indigenous artist navigates Aotearoa’s post-colonial music scene, and her journey from school music nerd to budding young neo-soul sensation.

Rezzy Crooks: The Curse of The Crooks
Are Rezzy Crooks Dunedin’s most cursed band? Rosa sat down with Sam, Jamie, and Toby (missing Josh) from Rezzy Crooks over Zoom to chat about how the band came to be, their musical journey, operating as a band during lockdown, and a conspiracy theory that may or may not involve the government.

The Knews
Sam chats with Cullen about his latest project The Knews, how he got here, songwriting, his inspiration and more.

School Fair: Upcoming gig and a little q&a with De

Lunar Intruder: Moonlight
Good music makes you forget you’re listening to it. It picks you up and takes you with it. The opening riff from “Off to Nowhere”, lead single from Lunar Intruder’s EP Moonlight, picked me up and took me back to shenanigans with mates, to spontaneous day trips and to naughty nights that felt like they’d never end. It’s a beautiful opening to this 5-track offering from Lunar Intruder, which tastefully melds indie-pop riffs with strong currents of garage rock and psychedelia.
